Readers familiar with this writer would know that I prefer wagons or estates to sedans. And so, writing with great glee, I'm thrilled to share with you that there will be a wagon version of the BMW 5 Series for this generation. This is the sixth BMW 5 Series Touring, born out of the eighth-generation 5 Series. Code-named G61, as opposed to the G60 sedan version, the official launch in Germany, many other European countries and Japan will begin in May 2024. Other markets are set to follow in June 2024. Compared to its predecessor, the new G61 is 97mm longer at 5,060mm, 32mm wider at 1,900mm and 17mm taller at 1,515mm. This 5'er Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, increasing by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres. For the first time, the 5'er Touring will be available as a battery electric vehicle (EV or BEV), and headlining the EV segment is the i5 M60 xDrive Touring.

With both cars featuring a host of styling and technology updates, the only hard choice left is to decide between the new BMW 5 Series sedan or BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo fastback.


Part of the BMW iPerformance range, the 530e is a 2-litre turbocharged petrol-powered sedan that packs a plug-in battery pack. Combined, the car will push out a smooth delivery of 249 horses and 420 Nm of torque. This is good enough for a speedy 6.2 seconds century sprint and a top speed in excess of 230 km/h.

Probably the clattering at idle was too embarrassing; or it could be due to the fact that it lacks the refinement when driven over longer distance.

With this mildly refreshed model, the 5 now sports an updated front and rear. The main difference is in the front apron, where it's now a bit more chiseled and shapely, giving the 5 a stronger, more aggressive face. On our 535i test-car, a set of elegant 19-inch rims filled the huge wheel arches perfectly - for the 5, I think nothing less than 19-inch wheels will do.

What you see here, is the latest face-lifted BMW 5 Series. No, really it is! I know the changes are subtle (maybe a bit too subtle), but as the saying goes: Don't fix it if it ain't broke.


Up close, the 5GT actually looks huge, both in length and height. My wife's first impression was that seemed to be in a similar class as the 7 Series. At almost 5 meters long, the measurements are not far off. Subtle changes to the front face and rear sharpen the look a bit. A set of large and sexy 20-inch wheels also add to the new modernized look. Smoothened and curvier lines help make the car look less chunky, and refreshed adaptive LED headlights are now standard on both the 528i and 535i.

Ever been in a situation where you found someone more attractive only after getting to know her/him better? Well, that was certainly the case with my encounter with the 5 Series GT, or 5GT for short.


From the onset, the car impresses with its dashing good looks. The pre-facelift model was already a looker, but Mercedes obviously felt that the staid quad-headlamp setup was getting old, so they've revamped it with a modern and sleek singular design with integrated LEDs, while the rear tail lamps also get a refresh with new LEDs. Very nice.

This means that both models have qualified for the contest to win the iF Gold Award, which selects the 50 “best of the best”. The design of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan skillfully translates the car’s attributes into an authentic formal language. The sheer presence and elegance of its design express the Sedan’s premium quality and outstanding ride comfort, while its sporty driving characteristics are reflected in dynamic bodywork lines and the overall evocation of a distinctly athletic car. The superlative aesthetics of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan are further borne out by its perfectly harmonious proportions and meticulously finished details.
